Opened this up for New Years and loved it so much I had to post the tasting note on WB:
-
2007 Luneau-Papin Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Le L D’Or - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine (12/31/2011)
Popped and poured, with a just touch effervescent spritz upon pouring. Light straw hue. Complex and almost atypically forward aromas that continually evolve in glass…tangerine zest and green apple morphs into pear and honeydew melon along with notes of candle wax, white flowers, sea spray, minerals - even a touch of peat as it warms! Light to medium-light body shows excellent concentration for Muscadet. Moderate acidity on the palate, which shows notes of freshly squeezed citrus juices, pear, herbaceous tinges, spring onion, and a distinct impression of saline minerals. If such a thing as high octane Muscadet exists…well, here it is. Lengthy close. Hard to venture a guess as to the aging potential of this unique wine but it should certainly do well for many years and, best to note, while certainly not lacking, the acidity isn’t overt and might suggest a shorter lifespan than normal for the appellation. Either way, this is compelling and fun to taste!

I’ve heard Luneau-Papin has a rep for being one of the top Muscadet producers but this was my first. For my tastes, great wines are those which are intellectually complex yet also still super tasty. Definitely all that and more in this bottle, it pretty much bowled me over and was somewhat evocative of really good 1er Cru Chablis. However, I can’t ever remember receiving such a great experience from a $21-$22 bottle of Chablis. Awesome QPR in that price range for those who enjoy the style.
I also left a comment to take my aging suggestion at the end with a grain of salt as I really have no experience with how Muscadet ages. I did save some of the bottle so we’ll see how it holds up tonight or tomorrow. All I know is I have one more left and keeping my hands off of it for another year or two is going to be really tough…
Should also note that a bottle of 2010 Bedrock Old Vines Zin opened up after this most definitely did not suck.
