So I’m living in Germany this year while writing my dissertation and am without access to my cellar. This is the first of what I hope will be a number of tasting notes on inexpensive bottles I pick up for daily drinking. I’m hoping to run into many things I don’t have the chance to try in the States. This Marcillac caught my eye, since I’ve never had one before. Hell, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one before. It’s not a special wine by any means, but for my tastes it beats the pants off of almost anything that’s available stateside at $10.

2007 Les Vignerons du Vallon Marcillac Les Parédous - France, Southwest France, Marcillac (11/21/2009)
This is a bottling from the co-op that bottles 55% of the production of the entire appellation of Marcillac. Purple to ruby. The nose started out a little grapey, but as it’s been open, it’s settled into a pleasant dark cherry note with a savory overtone that’s sometimes earthy and sometimes herbal. Solidly middle weight on the palate with smooth fruit and a slight acidic tang. The tannins are a little chalky and rustic in texture, but they’re quite light and not at all intrusive. The finish actually brings back some of the savory character of the nose and leaves the impression of a delightfully fresh wine. I’m sure this will develop over a couple of years, but it’s made to drink right now, so why wait. Nice value at 7€.
