2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett- Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/31/2010)
It is very good, but just not an exceptional JJ Prum. It is immediately recognizable with its lime, minerality, petroleum, oiliness, but a bit simple for a winery which usually turns out higher caliber juice for its regular Kabinett. Enjoyable? Yes. Superior? No. Still, I was pleased as I like the JJ Prum flavor profile and yearned for some which I found at a decent price.(86 pts.)
No kidding about pricey nowadays - try Sankt Urbans-Hof at $15 for a kabinett from a specific site, the Ockfener Bockstein was a steal at about $13 awhile ago.
Is it possible that it had closed up? Many Rieslings go through a dumb phase after a few years in bottle, only to emerge a few years after that. It’d be worth waiting for them to come out the other side as this is a screamingly top vintage.
Alex - Oh, ye of little faith. Prüm wines have a habit of tasting one-dimensional and boring at points in their youth, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in the experience of one bottle at this stage.
I am not all that familiar with your rating system, but 86 would seem like a good score. Assuming you bought this from me, which I think is correct, I would think that with a litle btl age, for $17.99, you will be very happy with this one.
I feel 86 is a good score. I feel this was good wine. This was bottle #2 of the 6 I bought from you, and I feel it is a good price for a very good bottle of wine.
I gave the 86 and wondered if some might think the score to be low, but I just do not want to be one of those guys who rates every bottle he consumes with a 10 point score where the minimum score is 90. In conclusion, I am very happy with my purchase, and believe that some age will only cause that score to improve.
$17.99 is a bargain price for this wine. Some may be sniffy about it ‘only’ being a Kabinett, but what a Kabinett it is! For such a small-scale wine this will have a long, pleasure-giving life, providing both intellectual and visceral enjoyment. It is a nice drink, too.
I ain’t no Riesling expert, but you would certainly enjoy them now, like Alex did with his 2007. But 2004 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kab will age for another 5+ years, in my opinion.
