TN: 2007 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py (France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon)

  • 2007 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon (2/13/2010)
Another delicious, food-friendly cru Beaujolais. Compared to the 07 Lapierre we drank last night, this offers a bit more tannic structure along with a juicy mouthful of earthy red fruits. Similarly pretty and floral on the nose, light and silky on the palate - just great with a meal. Eminently drinkable, if not quite as irresistable as the Lapierre.

Thanks for the TN.

I had a 2007 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py a few days ago. Really good ‘Gang of 5’ Beaujolais: with the same enjoyability quotient but thicker and fruitier than the brighter, sharper 2005 Marcel Lapierre Morgon from the day before - same coin though and with age will probably develop like the Lapierre.

Both were unfiltered and were the versions made without SO2 but with some added at bottling for keeping purposes. Lapierre also makes the same wine without any SO2 even at bottling but it requires handling below 14oC. I am not sure whether Foillard does the same but in any case I would buy the ones with SO2 at bottling for enhanced keeping purposes.

Love this wine, I have a case of this that I’ve been drinking through for a while. I find it shines brightly after decanting in a bottle-shaped decanter for about an hour.

I’ve got a few of these but haven’t tried one yet. Guess I need to soon. The '06 has got absolutely stunning aromatics. Can’t keep my hands off it!

While I really like the '07 Foillard, fwiw, I liked both the '06 Foillard and Lapierre better than the '07’s and was especially disappointed in the '07 Lapierre, which I found too light. However, the '07 Cuvee Marcel Lapierre, the one with the MMVII on the label, is killer.

Keep an eye once, on the Morgon Côte du Py “James” from Jean Marc Burgaud.

Trust me on this one : he will be soon very famous.

Drank an 05 last night. Such suprising vibrancy and acidity. It is delicate but surely can age wonderfully.

We had an 05 Yvon Metras in Paris last week that was insanely good (notes are here). Beaujolais is really under-appreciated for both its quality and value.

Faryan, “vibrancy” might be the single best descriptor of these wines. [welldone.gif]

Francois, thank you for this list of producers. We are more and more enjoying these Beaujolais for week night meals, and it’s good to get some new choices to try.

We visited Marcel Lapierre last summer and tasted through a number of his bottlings, including the 07 MMVII. Agree that his non SO2 version is delightful, but for immediate drinking. I believe his agreement with Kermit Lynch is to ship the sulphered version to the East Coast and the late-sulphered (or possibly the non-sulphered) version to CA. However, that this belief is based on a conversation with M. Lapierre in his limited English and our even more fractured French, so not entirely sure we got the details exactly right.

In any case, I’m just really enjoying the food-friendliness of these wines and look forward to trying a few new ones.

Thanks very much for the great list Francois. I’ve got another trip to France coming up in April and am leaning towards touring Beaujolais. Your contact list is very helpful, (as well as Schildknecht’s).

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Brun’s Blanc and will have to look for -Domaine des Tourniers, as well Mr. Burgaud’s Morgons.

Also, Steve, any suggestions are welcome.

Ducroux is fantastic. In the natural camp.

Francois, thanks for the list.
Several names that I don’t recognize and will try to seek out.

If interested here is my bit on bojo in my own wine-e-pedia.

Lyle,

I checked out the link to your Loire page as well as the bojo page.
That is an ambitious project and looks like a really useful resource.
Thanks for the work.

Had our last 2001 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py last month, and not only was it delicious, it still wasn’t at its peak. Could have gone another 5 years, anyway. Lots of really nice wines from Beaujolais noted above, but this particular bottling is my favorite vintage after vintage.

Cheers,

geo

I did not realize how ambitious until I started…I’d love to source some out but i like my own voice… [thankyou.gif]

Nice work Lyle. Could you PM me if you have any specific suggestions on touring Beaujolais (lodging/food, etc.)? It appears that Jean Foillard operates his own small Chambre d’hote. Haven’t found anyone (or any web data yet) with firsthand experiences.

Thanks.
