2007 I Custodi Etna Ætneus - Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC (6/18/2014)
Opened about an hour before drinking but did not decant. This may benefit from a decant as the tanins are slightly rocky and the nose got a lot more interesting late on in the glass after we started drinking it. An 80/20 blend of Nerello Mascalese & Nerello Cappuccio. There was a consensus that this had a very Gevrey Chambertin masculine character about it. I really like this wine’s weight and minerally crunchy red fruit flavors and spice. Towards the ends I was getting a decent whiff of some damp forest floor aromas. I’d decant the next one for an hour before drinking. Said to aged in small barrels but with a good mix of neutral oak. Did not sense any masking oak. Slightly darker in color, less elegant (at this point) and not as ethereal as the more Chambolle like Passopisciaro. (92 pts.)
