TN: 2007 Eric Kent Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Stiling Vineyard

  • 2007 Eric Kent Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Stiling Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/23/2009)
Very concentrated and presents itself as sweet or over ripe (which it is not). Fruit concentration is the dominating element at the moment. Hope time will let it come into more balance. Mix of primary red and black fruits, leaning more to the red camp. There is some structure here, but wonder if it is enough to balance out. (90 pts.)

Oooo,
That’s not what I was expecting from that wine. I really hope it comes around.

me too. Some comments on the other board give hope that it will. I’ll drink my 06s for now and bury these with the 05s

So what is this board? Chopped liver? Pleeeeeeeeeeeasssssssssse!

Oh…and enjoy your holiday weekend. Bone out.

Didn’t see any notes here on this wine. Thought it might be helpful if folks knew there were some comments on it.

Hope you have a great turkey day.

You probably won’t see any notes (on the other board) on that wine because it’s from Livermore!!!

And I call bullshit on the other board! I love wines from Livermore, and Eric Kent. My sister’s family lived there from '98 - 2003, and a very good friend Dane Stark with Page Mill Wines lives there…so I hope people take this area seriously!

Cheers Tim.

I had this wine twice before it was released. And from what I can tell from Tim’s notes this wine has improved a lot from the last time I had it which was with Kent during a barrel tasting 3-4 months ago (He is a great guy btw: former adman who escaped). It definitely improved between the two times I had it this year. I think it will come around. I have changed my buying pattern with EK. I have gravitated towards his Syrah’s and the SC chardonnay. The SC chard was a simply stunning wine when i had it out of barrel earlier this year. By far the best wine from EK I have had to date… but it was from a single barrel so not entirely representative probably.

Gene, I agree with you that this is his best Stiling PN to date. I also really like the Sonoma Coast Chard quite a lot. Kent is really dialing into his winemaking skills and both of these wines are terrific. They are fruity, balanced, possessing great acidity and elegantly styled. He is fine tuning his fruit sources and really on a good roll.

I sell his stuff – so take it for what it is worth.

I don’t sell it, just love it!

Great service too. I was looking for an older Kent for a tasting and the folks at the winery were actually trying to find me a bottle (they personally didn’t have any)

Uhm… where did you come up with Livermore? If that was an inside joke, sorry, I missed it. If you were serious… Stiling vineyard is right in Russian River Valley and Kent makes his wine in Santa Rosa.

I think T=Bone is thinking of “STEVEN” Kent winery in Livermore.

Thanks for explaining this…I wasn’t following his train of thought. Interestingly I live around the corner from Page Mill Winery.

There is a winery here that makes a pinot from grapes grown here in Livermore, Tenuta Vineyards. I can’t bring myself to try it. IIRC I saw a post and they were selling those grapes for 2k a ton.

There are several new wineries opening up in the Livermore Valley here. Had a syrah from Deer Ridge Vineyards that was enjoyable.

You might recall this thread:

I think these are better drunk young and that the pinots are probably the weakest link in their lineup.
