TN: 2007 Educated Guess Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Popped and poured this at Nomad Pizza tonight, after finishing off the last of a third of a bottle of ’06 Kosta Browne pinot noir Koplen Vineyard. Popped and poured, full knowing that this was not going be finished, also knowing that I could throw a vacuum on it overnight, and put it back into the cellar to get some air. This had a nice ruby/purple color in the glass.

I did a quick rinse on my glass with some table water and dumped it out, and then proceeded to swirl and aerate this in the glass for about 5 minutes while I gave it a few sniffs here and there. Sweet creamy vanilla nose, with hints of jammy red fruits. Raspberry, currants, black cherry, and blackberry dominate the nose, but there is a bit of alcohol on the nose as well. Obviously, this wine is young and will continue to integrate with time. Secondary nuances of cedar, mocha, and spice round out the nose.

On the palate, this definitely is definitely young, and definitely tight. This wine could easily use 4-6 hours in a decanter. Even so, I didn’t have the time, so it is what it is. Nice blackberry and currants on the palate, with that creamy sweet vanilla from the oak that sort of dominates at this point. Again, air will help this mellow out, and I will be curious to see how this is tomorrow. Definitely a new world fruit forward cab, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. The fruit is ripe, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that it is over extracted. The finish has some alcohol and tannins, again suggesting that this needs tome sideways time in the cellar, or at a minimum a few hours of air.

Day 2: I put a vacuum on the bottle over night and put it in the refrigerator, just so I could taste this on day 2. Today the nose was showing much of the same as it warmed up in my glass. On the palate, the wine seemed to lose quite a bit of structure, so it might be possible that the vacuum was bad. Even so however, the alcohol has settled out, and the creamy sweetness has settled out some as well. The flavors are nice, and the tannins are chewy, but it is just missing something. All in all, I’d rate this wine around 84-86 points, and it makes for a decent QPR.

I had no idea we even had this wine until I was going through the 6 cases or so in the corner of our cellar, where we have boxes of wines that need to be entered into CellarTracker. A lot of these wines are cheap ’07 Napa cabs that we have bought based on the vintage. Unfortunately with these, there wasn’t a receipt in the box, so I have no idea where they came from. In all honesty, I have no idea if I picked these up, or if my wife picked these up.

At the end of the day, this makes for a decent QPR, and I am sure we’ll be opening plenty more of these in time. Even so, I will decant the next one for a good 4 hours before we plan on drinking it! Cheers! -mJ

Mark, trying to set the record for longest TN written on a $20 dollar bottle of wine? neener

Only kidding…thanks for the note.

I think this could be the biggest TLPR of the century (thread length-price ratio)!

TLPR! I like it! LOL! yes, a bit of a ramble, but it gives our blog readers something to read. What I think is the funniest part is the fact that we have 3 of these wines over in the “to be entered into CellarTracker” boxes in the corner… [berserker.gif] -mJ

We need more detailed TNs like this one for bottles at the $20 pricepoint. Nice job, Mark. [cheers.gif]

LOL. Again, just more of a ramble really, but sometimes I start writing, and it keeps going, and going, and going. Kind of like my review from a place we had dinner last Thursday night. One of the longest blog entries I’ve ever written I think. LOL. But 10 courses will do that! [berserker.gif] -mJ

I can relate. I was writing a TN for a 2006 Rudd Crossroads that I had with dinner last night, which I wasn’t even overly smitten with … my TN just kept going and going, so I just rolled with it.

Had the 2007 at a restaurant last night and it was quite good. Nice well made cab with a bit of restraint but enough stuffing to be really nice. We also had the 2008 Educated Guess (the restaurant had the 2007 onj the list and brought the 2008 to the table saying they only had the 2008, later when we got a second bottle they found us a 2007). Anyways the 2008 Educated Guess is more of what would be described as a parkerized wine. A healthy wack of oak (lots of vanilla) and big and fruity. The 2007 and 2008 are currently two very different wines (I liked the 2007 quite a bit more). We paid $40/bottle off the restaurant list and were satisfied with the purchase (this was in Reno NV).

Picked up a bottle of this among others at my in laws for Christmas. My father in law usually grabs bottles, but he ran out of time. I grabbed it when I saw it due to this thread, and opened the bottle on Christmas Eve to have as a “cocktail” before dinner among a group of family and friends.

Fully agree that it drinks fine as a $20 wine. I do not think it matches up well with better Cabernets. The aforementioned American oak is way too present in a dill pickle kind of way.

It was a crowd pleaser to most everyone though.

We drank this again the other night side by side the '07 Louis Martini Napa Valley. Both with 4 hour decants, and the the Louis Martini just edged it out. Both nice QPR’s… -mJ

Opened bottle #3 from this case tonight, it got 4 hours in the duck. An outlier: like warm weather Syrah, not that interesting Cab Sav I recalled from the past. Would never guess this blind. Not really flawed though clearly hot, seems like bottle variation to us.

I have burned through a couple cases of this now; only one bottle has been flawed.

I have killed over three cases so far, and yes, there appears to be some bottle variation. Haven’t had a “bad” bottle, but some have not performed as well as others.

Anyone try the 08 yet? I saw it on the shelves last week.

Sucks. Hard core.

good to know… tks

I’ve heard from pretty much everybody that has tried the '08 that it’s pretty bad. However, I have had the '09 and it’s pretty good. Definitely nice for the price.

Yeah, I think the '09 is as good, and possibly better than the '07.

09 is officially green lighted.

End of an era, bottle #12 is dry.
