2007 Domaine Tempier Bandol - France, Provence, Bandol (1/5/2010)
This is dark, dark garnet, barely opaque. I had been anticipating this wine since first tasting the 2007 Tempier Rose (one of the finest wines ever made, forget about it being Rosé). Well, considering this is just the dregs left over from the vineyard designated Tourtine, Migoua, and Cabassaou, it’s pretty darn good. Beautiful deep fruited nose, with some light garrique; on the palate it is rich and voluptuous, with dark berry flavors and hints of the fabulous watermelon and strawberry notes that dominated the rosé in its youth; there are moderate tannins here, and nice acidity to wrap it up and hold the finish. I’m thinking this will last several years, but is so forward now I’ll probably drink these early on while waiting for the presumably more complex and ageworthy SVD bottlings. A terrific “regular” Bandol from Tempier. (92 pts.)
