TN: 2007 Domaine Les Aphillanthes, CdR

2007 Dom. Les Aphillanthes, CdR
Imported by Peter Weyngandt Selections
This 07 CdR has a very Corbieres like nose with dark peppery blackberry, and that steely minerality that is so destictive to the region, backed by ripe red raspberry and soft grenachey, cherry liquer. Medium full body, with an irony, minerally feel to the black raspberry, red plum, kirsch, and a beefy meat blood. Very smooth, with a velvety, soft finish, a bit of heat, but long. I would like a bit more acid, but very approchable now, and a well put together lower end cuvee.

Thanks for the notes John.

I just recently found this producer and really enjoyed the '06 CdRV “Cuvee des Galets”. They also have another CdRV offering called “Cuvee des Trois Cepages” which is supposed to excellent.

Odd coincidence, but this is exactly the wine I have in my glass when coming to this forum tonight after recently registering.

As it happens, though, my bottle is quite different in character than yours. The fruit in mine is entirely secondary. The predominant aroma in the first hour is all turned earth, with some black walnut, rotting logs, and chalky mineral character. It’s relatively full bodied, bold with some heat, and some peppered salami on the palate. A bit of black fruit, but again, I’m having to dig past the earthy and woody characteristics to find it. Sits on a pretty decent frame. Mine needs more of the fruit you describe to really approach being in balance.

Welcome to the board Dennis!

I highly recommend spending a few bucks more on the Cotes du Rhone Villages level from this producer. As I mentioned to John, the Galets is delicious with impeccable balance.

Welcome to the board, Dennis.
I’m surprised to see such variation in our notes. Interesting. I wonder if it is just a case of bottle variation or our palates are that different???

Brett,
I was just going through my cellar(pallet at the winery) and discovered an 05 cuvee des trois cepages. I’ll have to check that one out sometime soon.

I am not surprised by the different tasting notes as I was not getting what John was last night. He was describing it and I was getting a sulfury, grapey nose that I thought might have some Brett. After a lot of swirling and some time in the glass I got some fruit but I had to work at it. I liked it better in the mouth than the nose. I would like to check it again tonight but no luck John liked it that much! neener

How cute is it that John and Kimberly communicate through WineBerserkers, on the same thread.

You guys should stretch your heads out of your respective rooms and have a chat.

If it aint broke…

Thanks, John.
I’m sure the bottles were different. My wife wouldn’t even drink my bottle - the nose really turned her off.

I have not seen it about, but will keep an eye out for some.
I have decided I really have to try to buy more 2007 CDRs than I am drinking short term.

Kimberly had the same reaction. I think it came off a bit sulfury. I don’t mind that so much. I really enjoyed the wine. The grenache in it seamed a bit heavy, lacking freshness, for being so young, but that would be my only gripe. It’s very good for a sub $15 CdR.
