TN: 2007 Domaine Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone Reserve

Every once and a while I will purchase a wine that RP scores 90 or higher but which can be bought for under $30. With no exceptions that come to mind, every one of these wines have tasted like utter crap.

RP scored this wine a 90 and I was able to buy it for $14. But, in this case, it was a wine from an exceedingly exceptional vintage. So, I decided to take the gamble, expecting to be disappointed as usual…

The wine at first was more light bodied, but by hour 5 was more textured and medium bodied. The fruit was simple and clean with notes of cherry and kirsch. The tannins were noticeable, but acceptable. The finish was short but nice. All in all a very nice, easy to drink quaffer. I would rate this wine a solid 88. If you are someone who actually prefers French wine I think you could easily add 2 points.

I am going to try to acquire a case of this stuff to have as a house wine. This QPR is the real deal! [welldone.gif]

P.S., This wine makes me curious as to how many similar QPR’s will be found in Napa for the 2007 vintage. I suspect there will be quite a lot of really good but reasonably priced wines to be had…

Curtis, check out your local Costco for a nice Cab. [stirthepothal.gif]

Great note BTW.

LOL!

BTW, I also tried a 2007 Kirkland CdP in the past few weeks that was rather drinkable. But it was more expensive than the Veneur and not as good. I will also likely try the 2007 Kirkland Napa cab because, well, you never know…

Curtis, the 07 Kirkland reminds me of a wine that I just can’t remember the name. I know that it has a regular that runs around $40 for the regular and $60 or so for their premium wine which has the same name plus a four digit number. I just can’t remember the name but the Costco wine reminds me of that reserve. Maybe you’ll know the wine. I also know that Vaynerchuck loved the 04 of that reserve wine.

Tomorrow I will go for 2 cases of that juice and will cost me about 2 bottles of the 05 Shafer HSS! headbang
