2007 Domaine Georges Mugneret/Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (10/14/2010)
Scintillating, deep ruby color. Beautifully complex and dynamic nose. Perfumed and enchantingly spicy. This is a pretty, mid-weight, silky-textured, finely delineated and detailed Clos Vougeot that I am tempted to describe as “feminine,” although I’m not so sure what that term means anymore. Gorgeously open now, perhaps deceptively so, since this is far from a simple wine and there is undoubtedly much of interest still in reserve. The 2007 vintage seems well-suited to Mugneret-Gibourg, which is rapidly becoming one of my favorite Burgundy producers. (94 pts.)
Harry, FWIW, i opened a 1996 villages the other night…expecting dominant acidity, which showed up for the first few hours…and was consistent with an experience with the wine in 2009, but…two days later I wrote in my wine inventory program:
acidity galore at first…then it toned down after a day in open decanter and became more noticeably tannic and pleasant with lots and lots of nice choc, cherry, spicy fruit on hand to dominate the finish. This is really fine wine…great VR villages. Just don’t touch any until 2016 at the earliest, and provide plenty of aeration and serve a little cool and expect a lively acidity. Yum…quelle surprise!
Burghound’s scores and notes for the Mugneret-Gibourg '07s were strong (low 90s) across the lineup… he rated the Clos Vougeot 92 points from bottle. John Gilman was over-the-top enthusiastic… his reviews were what prompted me to take the plunge, and I’m glad I did!
I’m not sure “missed” is the right way to look at it. His ratings are simply his opinions. Of course given the depth and breadth of his experience his opnions carry alot of weight but that doesn’t mean someone might simply disagree with him on matters of taste. For example he has never seemed that enamored with Truchot while others find those wines to be the apex of red burgundy.
Im not so sure his ratings were that low for 07 though were they?
I’ve had some off bottles of the Ruchottes from 88… a corked btl of 92 chaignots last week (not their fault), but the 99 chaignots that I had last week was tasty also…
