TN: 2007 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis

  • 2007 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru (12/6/2014)
Popped and poured to accompany Muscovy duck. Medium ruby. Really amazing nose of anise, raspberry, fennel, iron, rose petals, and earth. Seamless layers of mulberry, black raspberry, iron filings, licorice, and red plum on the palate, which seemed to exhibit effortless poise and sinewy strength. Freshening acidity and surprisingly filed-off tannins, leading to a long, persistent finish of red fruit laced with iron flecks and grip. It was a pleasure to sit with this wine a while, tasting and smelling its many facets and complexities as it morphed through the evening. (94 pts.)

Some of these 2007 vintage are just amazing at the moment. Thanks for the note.

Yes, I agree. I was somewhat surprised, but grateful nonetheless, that a grand cru would be this open.

Cheers,
Doug

Nice note Doug. I agree with PCLIN, that’s 2007 for you. The other weekend I had a 2007 Rousseau Ruchottes that was just great. A 2009 Dujac Bonnes Mares, tasted at the same time, was what you would expect from such a young Grand Cru, full of great material but all over the place, yet to come together. At the time, people are dismissive of ‘lesser vintages’ like 2007s but for better addresses they definitely have their place. It’s really good to have a great Grand Cru experience without having to wait 20 years, some times.

Cheers, Howard

Nice note, thanks for posting.

The beautiful 2007 Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin VV that I had the other day was a ringing endorsement for the vintage.

Doug, great note on the CSD.

Howard, Peter, Charlie,

Thanks for your comments. I have come to regard the 2007 vintage as a gift to those of us who have plenty of bottles from other vintages slumbering for years or decades in order to make old bones. Incredibly I still find the odd bottle in the marketplace languishing on the shelf.

Cheers,
Doug

Agree - 2007 is drinking well right now, you can still find them and they are still priced well - for the most part.

George

Just had a 2007 Vogue musigny last week. the wine is singing beautifully right now.

David

Whoa, that sounds amazing.

Cheers,
Doug

2007 Mazis Rousseau was awesome last year, 2007 Clos de la Roche Rousseau undrinkably young. ???

The Mazis was a leaker which might have helped.

Great note Doug!

So good it convinced me to buy a couple.

Another anecdote, extolling the beauty of the 2007 vintage! I just picked up some Gouges Les St. Georges for $64.95/bottle today. Obviously, the market doesn’t value the vintage as much as some of us…

George and Todd,

Good pickups, and good pricing too. Bummer about the Clos de la Roche, though.

Fred,

Hope your bottles show well. We should keep the string going!

Cheers,
Doug

Doug

I am pleasantly surprised by the wine. It is loaded with sweetly ripe red berries, with good amount of minerality. Tannin is smooth but very firm. I think although the wine is enjoyable now, it can age for at least 20-30 years.

David

Doug based on your positive note, I am going to open an 07 Drouhin Clos St Denis tonight.

Hope it shows well, Suzanne.

David, that sounds lovely.

I agree that although these wines are open now, they will have the ability to age also.

Cheers,
Doug

Agree - went to a blind CSD tasting last month and another 07 (Arlaud) took the honours in a lineup that included 99s ad 05s - the latter Dujac, no-less. I was amazed it was an 07 as it was so precise and detailed, not a hint blowsy. Was no fluke either, for some reason there were 2 of the Arlaud and they were indeed placed 1st and 2nd by about 10 tasters…

Bill,

Thanks for your comments. Have not tried an Arlaud CSD and wil be on the lookout. Nice to know the 07 showed so well.

Cheers,
Doug

Come to think of it, should have taken the EP allocation of '12 Arlaud CSD, now I really need to go out look for some earlier vintages.
