2007 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru (12/6/2014)
Popped and poured to accompany Muscovy duck. Medium ruby. Really amazing nose of anise, raspberry, fennel, iron, rose petals, and earth. Seamless layers of mulberry, black raspberry, iron filings, licorice, and red plum on the palate, which seemed to exhibit effortless poise and sinewy strength. Freshening acidity and surprisingly filed-off tannins, leading to a long, persistent finish of red fruit laced with iron flecks and grip. It was a pleasure to sit with this wine a while, tasting and smelling its many facets and complexities as it morphed through the evening. (94 pts.)
Nice note Doug. I agree with PCLIN, that’s 2007 for you. The other weekend I had a 2007 Rousseau Ruchottes that was just great. A 2009 Dujac Bonnes Mares, tasted at the same time, was what you would expect from such a young Grand Cru, full of great material but all over the place, yet to come together. At the time, people are dismissive of ‘lesser vintages’ like 2007s but for better addresses they definitely have their place. It’s really good to have a great Grand Cru experience without having to wait 20 years, some times.
Thanks for your comments. I have come to regard the 2007 vintage as a gift to those of us who have plenty of bottles from other vintages slumbering for years or decades in order to make old bones. Incredibly I still find the odd bottle in the marketplace languishing on the shelf.
Another anecdote, extolling the beauty of the 2007 vintage! I just picked up some Gouges Les St. Georges for $64.95/bottle today. Obviously, the market doesn’t value the vintage as much as some of us…
I am pleasantly surprised by the wine. It is loaded with sweetly ripe red berries, with good amount of minerality. Tannin is smooth but very firm. I think although the wine is enjoyable now, it can age for at least 20-30 years.
Agree - went to a blind CSD tasting last month and another 07 (Arlaud) took the honours in a lineup that included 99s ad 05s - the latter Dujac, no-less. I was amazed it was an 07 as it was so precise and detailed, not a hint blowsy. Was no fluke either, for some reason there were 2 of the Arlaud and they were indeed placed 1st and 2nd by about 10 tasters…
