TN: 2007 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

  • 2007 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/23/2011)
Dark purple core with some lighter reddish color around the rim. Excellent nose which showed a touch of reduction at first, but blew off quickly to reveal plummy aromatics along with black pepper and some briny notes. Full bodied and highly intense. This is my first 2007 Pegau and it is my favorite wine tasted from 2007 in the Southern Rhone. Gorgeous, pure layers of fruit which cascade through the palate while maintaining the perfect weight and sit in perfect balance with the structure here. Tannins are chalky, but not particularly firm and are surprisingly unobtrusive. Peppered stone fruit dominates the seemingly endless finish. Love this stuff!

Very encouraging note Anthony, almost opened this Tuesday, but opted for the 06 Usseglio Mon Aieul instead, which was terrific in its own right. Out of curiosity, have you had the 07 Beaucastel yet, and if so which one do you think is showing better if opned today (07 Pegau vs. Beau)?

Happy Holidays, Dale

Happy Holidays to you as well Dale. I think for the short term the Pegau is a lot more approachable and enjoyable, but I also think the 2007 Beaucastel is a great wine. It didn’t show much when I tasted in winter 2010, so I should revisit. Choosing between these is like choosing between cake and ice cream though.

We need to make sure we hook up in January.

Had both wines in late spring, although not side by side. The Beaucastel seemed to be kind of “harmless” and (too) fruity (modern) against Pegau, a typical characteristic for the recent vintages of Beau, while Pegau is concentrated, deep, complex, masculine and traditional … will age for 25+ years, a follower to the great 1981.
That doesn´t mean Beau 07 is bad, just the opposite, but Pegau is a great lot more interesting.

Great note Anthony… one rocking '07!
