    Definitely one of the better new world Pinots at the tasting. Like so many other bottles of Domaine Drouhin wines, this was clearly new world, but had a Burgundian nous and finesse. The nose showed sweet notes of winter melon, cherries, brambly herbs and some white peppery spice notes on a little bed of earth. Nicely complex. The palate had a really nice velvety texture, good depth and a really expreesive openness. It took on the sweet cherry tones of the nose, almost a bit too sweet for my tastes, but this was nicely balanced and supported by well integrated acidity and fine tannins. The finish was long, with a nice spicy tail. Solid stuff. Still quite primary, but this too should age very well. (92 pts.)

Thanks for the note Paul. I try to avoid opening these for 6+ years from vintage (longer for the 05s) as they can be tightly wound, revealing mostly glimpses of their potential. Your 07 sounds more giving. FYI, 07 is a hopeless vintage plagued by critics, greenness and Geosmin…except the good ones. [wink.gif]

I just had a bottle of the 2006 the other night at a restaurant. Showed very nicely, a little darker fruit than normal although that would be to be expected, very good texture and lots of flavor. This certainly would go for several more years but it was certainly drinking excellently and that was on a pop and pour paired next to a dry-aged prime NY strip. Good stuff.

opened the 2005 blind against Drouhin’s Beaune Clos des Mouches 2002 recently. The Laurene was an excellent wine, but clearly NOT a Burgundy, not that it should be. It took everyone (including my wife) about a sniff or even a look at the color of the two wines to tell which was which.
