TN: 2007 Domaine de la Pépière (Marc Ollivier) Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Granite de Clisson

2007 Domaine de la Pépière (Marc Ollivier) Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Granite de Clisson - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine (5/26/2014)
Brought a mag of this to a party, so no formal notes, but I can say that this is the kind of Muscadet I like. It is richer than normal, and has more breadth to the aromas and flavors. It’s still quite linear and precise compared to other wines, but it is in no way severe. Great with the grilled shrimp kabobs.

An AFWE fav, yet there’s plenty of flavor. Interesting wine to bring to a party, especially if the attendees were not wine geeky.

The bottle was left in the geek area. And besides, I own almost zero non-geek wine.

I bought a case of this and a case of the 2005. Great wines that age well.

Anyone tasted '05 recently?
I’m still ignoring mine.

IMO one of the great things about Muscadet [and indeed Beaujolais and other ‘less celebrated’ areas] is that the best versions can be drunk early, as they mature and much later with different pleasures.

I have had the 2005 Clisson recently and it is drinking superbly… but I would have said the same thing some years ago too.

Clos de Briords and Les Gras Moutons [currently drinking the 2009s of both] are my basic Pepiere fare with the Granite de Clisson and the more recent but very good Chateau-Thebaud Clos des Morines [2009 was the first vintage of this] usually surviving rather longer in the cellar.

Along with Luneau-Papin and Guy Bossard in particular , Marc Ollivier [now with Remi Branger] makes great and still inexpensive Muscadets.

You guys in the States are fortunate with your importers since in the UK our main source has just gone into liquidation. Fortunately we are in the Loire every year but not always as far West as Muscadet although we can buy online too.

I have read a number of reports that the '05 is drinking very well (including, but not limited to Nigel’s report above). Unfortunately my remaining bottles are in a deep state of buried.

Had it two weeks ago with a couple other board members. Blew me away. In my opinion, had many comparable qualities to Raveneau’s Butteaux cuvee. Intense oceanic grit, and vibrant lemon tones. I think Butteaux can have a nice viscosity that the Pepiere didn’t really have, but the flavors were close.

For my tastes, Pepiere’s Clisson is the pinnacle of Muscadet.

To make up a classification system, I guess there’s a spectrum of seriously geeky, geeky, transitional and main stream. I love exploring “seriously geeky” wines but don’t have a cellar full. Clisson is geeky with a broader appeal. Certainly not for someone looking for sweet white Zin. I’ve been surprised by the enjoyment expressed by several friends in the “transitional” phase. Fun to share and witness.

Nice! We just opened a mag of this for an event and it was one of the favorites. There were also magnums of 2010 Clisson, 2010 Clos des Briods, 2004 Clos des Briods and 2010 Chateau Thebaud among many many many more

That is a whole lot of Muscadet!

It was Musca-day! Trays of awesome shellfish and copious amounts of Muscadet is a yearly tradition in DC before it gets too gross and hot.

Damn, my '05 mag is missing and presumed drunk! Maybe I “left the bottle in a geek area”. I’ll have to console myself with some Briords.
