TN: 2007 Domaine de la Janasse - Côtes du Rhône (France, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône)

  • 2007 Domaine de la Janasse Côtes du Rhône - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône (7/14/2009)
    – popped and poured –
    – tasted non-blind over 2 hours –
    – 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Carignan, 5% Cinsault, 5% Mourvedre –

NOSE: very reticent upon opening, and it did open-up some with air time, but it did seem tight throughout; primary aroma of ripe dark fruits, meatiness, and a hint of lavender; secondary aromas of spice and spicy meat.

BODY: clear; magenta/garnet color of medium-light to medium depth; medium bodied.

TASTE: Right away, I noticed the drying tannins and juicy acidity – they seem to be well-balanced, but very disjointed right now; flavors of fresh black cherries and kalamata olive dominate; a dash of chalky minerality shows through; the fruit is obviously very ripe; the 14% alc. comes through just a bit on the finish; short-medium length finish (25-30 sec.); comes across as being more ‘wild and crazy’ than ‘symmetrical and deliberate.’ This wine is somewhat odd to me: it seems like it needs a little bit of bottle age to further integrate, but it doesn’t seem to have the structure to last very long, either. I’d say maybe Drink: 2010-2012.
