2007 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (2/10/2012)
This had been opened for 24 hours and I gotta say, based on this bottle, I was very disappointed in this wine. the nose is pretty with violets, red cherries and a little framboise and a lot of spice.
On the palate it’s kind of flat and one dimensional. A lot of spice but a simple kind of chocolatey red fruit. Dried out quickly…
Tony, just had this a couple weeks ago with Jeb (we live 6 miles apart and get together often) in a 2007 CdP Tasting. It was in the last flight, pairing with Deux Freres & Reine des Bois, and showed very well. While decidedly modern and short of the other two, it was absolutely not flat or one dimensional. The oak tannins may in fact be at play with the drying out you experienced.
Perhaps we didn’t have a great bottle. My friend who owned the bottle opened the night before to have a glass or two and didn’t care for it when he opened it. So he figured it would be better on day 2 and well, the fruit was disappearing and drying out as we experienced. None of us went back to it and the wine was dumped. Oh well. I do have a 2001 on tap to open soon and check out.
