TN: 2007 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

2007 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/31/2009)
Dark, not quite opaque garnet; The nose shows roasted mushrooms, asparagus, and grilled meat (almost a distinct lamb note); palate is dark and intense, richly flavored but not at all ripe or candied as many 07s are. There is black cherry and raspberry, lavender, mixed herbs, a fair dose of fine tannins, and great overall balance and structure. Out of the few dozen 07s I’ve tasted so far, this might be the wine of the vintage, with the best balance of concentration, lower ripeness level, complexity, and aging potential. (95 pts.)
