TN: 2007 Domaine Anne Gros Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau

  • 2007 Domaine Anne Gros Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny (12/20/2014)
I’m generally a fan of this house with its modernist style and good climats. However, I tasted the range of 2007s on release and was not impressed by the bony, fairly acidic wines. Seven years after vintage, how’s this travelling? … Medium red colour. Probably better on bouquet than palate. A pure, clean Chambolle nose of musk, raspberries, bramble and blackberries with a touch of cranberry. Perhaps some aromas of dried herbs but not green and not much secondary development. Some spicy oak also, yet to fully integrate. On palate, quite tart with cranberry and sour cherry predominating and some chalky minerals. Also a savoury, tobacco leaf element. Not green but quite fresh, with fairly prominent acids. I don’t mind this but ultimately this wine doesn’t really have the fruit weight it needs. I think it may have put on a little weight since I first tasted it, so perhaps hold for another 3-4 years? (88 pts.)

We had the 1999 over the summer and enjoyed it very much.

This bottling is a higher-altitude cru that in my experience is what it is - a pure but lighter style of Chambolle. In its youth the oak can be a little distracting. This is not from the 1er cru portion of Combe d’Orveau.

Glenn, I’ll look out for '99s.

Joe, good comment. I don’t think the lighter vintage that '07 was did this cru any favours. I’ve been loving '07 Gevreys of all levels recently for example but they are typically much more structured, denser wines. I had both the '08 and '09 AG Combe d’Orveau on release and thought that they were much better for this reason. I appreciate palates vary, of course.

Cheers, Howard

Funny. Just had the 2006 a couple of nights ago. A great wine. Way over its punching class. Great aromatics that were interesting, fresh, bright and lively over the top of a wine that was deep and rich while still having Chambolle form and structure. Youthful and delicious. I was both surprised and impressed at how gold it was. Luscious and yet textured and ready to go while having years iin front of it. Tasted the 2007 out of barrel in 2008. This wine is excellent.
