TN: 2007 Denner - Zinfandel (Paso Robles, CA)

  • 2007 Denner Zinfandel - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (7/7/2009)
    – popped and poured –
    – tasted non-blind over 2 days –
    – 86% Zinfandel, 7% Syrah, 7% Peite Verdot –

NOSE: extremely rich, ripe fruits – loganberry, maybe some blueberry; plenty of oak; hints of cardamom, fresh-popped popcorn, and fennel root.

BODY: clear; dark color of medium-deep to deep depth; full bodied.

TASTE: soft (my gosh, the pH must be high on this); very ripe fruits – too ripe for my liking – kind of Aussie-like; some cedar; oak; a bit bubble gummy; sweet, not earthy; probably some r.s. here; a bit hot on the finish. This is a big bruiser of a Zin – if this wine were a person, the word “elegant” would surely draw a contorted expression of confusion. I know there’s a market for this type of Zinfandel (as evidenced by some of the previous CT reviews), but I consider this a total rip-off at the $40+ price-tag Denner is sticking on this thing.

There’s gotta be a market for this, but I’m not part of it… though I gave them a try for a while… just too goopy for my taste

agreed … way too goopy … and this is coming from someone who thinks their other reds range from good to excellent. Zin just doesn’t fit into their lineup, IMO.

I’ve found everything from these guys pushing ripeness to the extremes. Not sure I’ve ever had their Zin but I’m not anxious to either. [blink.gif]

if you think their other wines are pushing ripeness levels (and don’t like them because of that) then there is absolutely no way you would like this stuff. FWIW, I love their Mourvedre and Dirt Worshipper, I think their Syrah is pretty good, and also like their Ditch Digger. Have you tried the Ditch Digger, Cris? I think, out of their entire lineup, that would be the one you might like.

BTW, you’ll have the chance to reconfirm your impressions of their Mourved and Dirt Worshipper on July 18.

Damn, Brian! You drink more Paso wine than I do!
