TN: 2007 Copain Syrah Tous Ensemble (USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County)

Really wound up tight, but with a couple hours of air it did open up some, dark fruit and green peppercorns mixed with what i would consider some new oak. This is a big wine at the moment, but has a nice pretty medium weight finish.

Definitely adventures in baby killing, but what the hell it was a thursday night. I seem to remember a year in bottle really transforms most of Wells wines and at $20 are you kidding me.

So, do you think that this is indicative of what '07 has to offer?

Have not tried the 07 tous ensemble syrah yet, but the ensemble series in general always turns out for me to be a great QPR. I always get a few bottles of it. Definitely for a “what the hell on a Thursday night” wine. Thanks for the note

I don’t know Bill, as this is a blend of i believe three Mendocino vineyards. This is the first 07 I have tried and would be happy if all the Syrahs were along these lines, I seems FMIII was pretty happy with his trip to Copain recently.

Sean, for $20 i should have bought a case.

Had a glass at a restaurant recently and thought this was decent, but wasn’t inclined to buy; as more and more notes come out noting the improvement with air (which I observed to some extent during the course of my meal too), I’m leaning toward getting a bottle to give this a real shot given that by the glass, you never know how old the wine is, your time is limited, and you’re focused on conversation.

Has anyone had both this and the 06? Maybe I’ll try that vintage for variety.

I was told at the winery that the sources are Alder Springs, Eaglepoint Ranch and Hawks Butte.

Had a glass at Hillstone - I had hopes that this would excel at a budget price, but my impression is mixed. It was muted at first, and then more and more pine-like spice and herbaceousness come out with time; has elements I like and is better than average in character for syrah at this price, but somehow it just doesn’t all come together right now.
