2007 Copain Pinot Noir Monument Tree - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (6/25/2010)
13.8% alcohol. Medium ruby red with very expressive red fruit aromas. Bright and delicious red fruit and spice on the palate, lingering aftertaste. The bottle continued to improve with air time. While it didn’t demonstrate the laser-like focus and weightlessness of Wells’ 09s, I thought that this was extremely impressive. Copain is in the midst of a beautiful and powerful transition that is amazing to watch. Can’t wait for the 09s! (92 pts.)

I tasted this at the winery in January with Wells and loved it and bought some. But I have to say that the leftovers I took home didn’t show so well later that evening and the next day. The wine showed the warmth of the vintage a little too much later – too much candy cherry fruit for my tastes.
I’m with you on the 09s. They are less ripe, and consequently are more taught. I thought the purity of their fruit was spectacular.
The 09s were an eye-opener. They really define the transition that Wells is making. And, pinot-lovers - watch out for the Anderson Valley!
Per the recent post with news of the sale of the Monument Tree Vineyard to Twomey, it appears that 2009 (if any) will be the last vintage that Copain will produce from this vineyard?
Andrew, I seem to recall that the 09 will be the last for Copain.
Sad to see that vineyard go from the lineup. It has been one of my recent favorites.
