TN: 2007 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne

At first tightly coiled, with citrus fruit and some marzipan, with laser sharp focus, tremendous tension and a mountain of geology. Over time this blossomed, growing in depth and breadth, but still remaining a towering wine of impeccable balance and poise. Fresh, incredibly deep and impossibly powerful without any sense of fatness. Chiseled, multifaceted, and nearly endless yet simultaneously fresh and clean. A wine of both harmony and contrasts all coming together to a complete whole. I smelled the wine more than drank it. A bucket list wine that exceeded my high expectations. Humbling to drink this. Stunning. I only wish I can try this again in 15 years. Breathtaking. 99 (99 pts.)

I think you’re being a bit harsh on the wine Todd. Had it last month and it has got to deserve another point.

Ha!

Jeremy that’s funny. Drinking this, I was sitting in a state of awe (enjoying a terrific meal FWIW). I sat stupidly silent in a fugue state, with my patient and understanding better half tolerating my absence, trying to figure out exactly why it wasn’t perfect and my thought was, well something may be better and it is a bit young. I’ve had some reasonable wines in my life and good God this was monumental. I’m not sure I will have a better wine any time soon or not soon. Sometimes, you just realize you are in the presence of greatness, and I was. You may be right. I’ll blame it on a combination of jet lag, and as I was visiting London, a temporary spirit of British restraint.

Very nice. Was this on the list there?

Thanks of reading everyone.

Dan, yes it was on the list.

Wow! Happy to see that a great producer, from a great piece of land in a great vintage can produce such an amazing experience. It doesn’t always work out that way, especially when you go in with high hopes.

can’t even imagine drinking this now, just the 07 rougeots i had 6 months ago was incredibly young and quite reduced.

Sorry your Rougeots showed so tight and reduced. This wasn’t. After a long discussion with the somm, who was quite honest and I thought accurate from wines we discussed that I know, about what wines he thought were open and those that were not, and trusting Jeremy Holmes’s note from a month earlier gave me the courage to order it, and it showed fantastically. Tightly coiled at first, but incredibly open after around 30 minutes. A spellbinding wine that I would love to try again in a decade plus, but this was not an exercise in infanticide. I suspect this will be my only ride with the 07 CC and I can’t see how it was an error.

i don’t think it would ever be considered an error to have the opportunity to drink such a wine. i was simply commenting on my experience with a wine which should require less bottle age.

agreed
one day you will finally give a 100/100
it will happen

Fantastic note, thanks for sharing. Coche is a wonder.

Excellent note. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. 92 Coche Corton had similar impact on me. Just could not believe that a white could be so good and have so many layers and facets.
How was your meal at The Ledbury?

Kent,

Sorry for the delay

It was fantastic. Elegant yet relaxed from start to finish. Thoughtful very well executed food, perfect timing. It was one of those zen meals where I am sure there was a ton of effort to make it look effortless. One of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time. I can’t rec it highly enough.

Hi Todd,
Similar impressions from a liesurely saturday lunch a couple of years ago. Included a tour of the kitchen and a wonderful discussion with Brett Graham re cattle breeding and the importance of working with farmers to procure the very best produce. Nice to see an Aussie chef starring in the big smoke. Also great wine service from a very knowledgeable Canadian Somm.
