2007 Chasseur Chardonnay Russian River Valley- USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (1/9/2010)
I gave this about an hour of air before tasting. Quite a bit of citrus on the nose and palate but not overpowering. Bright and crisp it rounds out with a bit of vanilla. The oak is well integrated. While it is rich from a flavor perspective it stays light on its feet and is really balanced.
Best Chasseur RRV Chard for me to date. I believe this will pick up a bit of weight and round out a bit with some more age. Outstanding. (92 pts.)
I still have a few SVD Chasseurs from 2005 in the cellar - the last I opened still had GOBS of new oak, so I’m hoping to wait on the rest. Doesn’t sound like the appellation bottling did, but I can’t recall my RRV or SC bottles of the '05 since I had them years ago.
CG- I’m on a Chasseur kick this weekend. I have an 07 Sngiacomo open for todays games. Stunning wine. I think it will be as good as the 05. Will post a note in a bit. The Sang is always one of my favorite chards and a great value at the club price.
Todd- I really liked the 05 Chards. I don’t recall thinking they were heavy on oak but it’s been awhile… I do like to give them at least 1 hr of air. I find they come alive a bit more. I also found the 05’s to get better and better as they aged.
2007 Chasseur Chardonnay Green Acres Hill Sangiacomo Vineyard (USA, California, Sonoma County, Carneros) 1/10/2010
This is terrific at this early age . Nose is a bit shy but it more than makes up for it upon tasting. Tropical fruit with some secondary citrus and custard. This is a rich and big wine that manages to stay well balanced and crisp. I did not find it a bit hot or too much oak influence. A very long finish that lingers on and on. 94 pts !
I think will follow along the line of the 05 and get better with another year or 2 in the cellar. An outstanding wine and value. I will be getting a few more.
I’ve not had any of the pinot’s yet. Will probably crack a SC in the next month or so but I like to give all the pinot’s about a year after release.
Todd, I agree but thought the '05 SVDs were fabulous on release, with more than enough fruit to balance the oak.
Now the fruit has faded badly but the oak hasn’t, actually poured an '05 Green Acres Hill down the sink over Christmas…truly an awful bottle of Chardonnay!
Todd-For what it’s worth I went back and looked on my notes on the 05 Sang Chard. I had the last one in April of this year and it was the only one that I noticed some heat and alcohol. The others were all very balanced.
This has even gotten better. Gave it about 45 minutes of air. It is sublime. As good as the SVD’s, perhaps even better at this point. Yes it has oak but it really is integrated well. The wine is very well balanced and is just sublime. Would put this up blind against some of the top chards. Need to order more at the club price of $32 it’s a great value.
