TN: 2007 Charvin Chateauneuf du Pape

Magic.
This is the combination of good concentration, pure cherry fruit and a lip smacking finish that Bob Parker promised.
This is great.

2007 Charvin Chateauneuf du Pape

Gorgeous red color. Bing cherry nose. Penetrating. This is that pure “Rayas-like” grenache nose. More restraint here however.
The palate is balanced to the hilt.
Now primary Grenache on the palate. Cherry fruit. Some slight Herbes de Provence on the incredibly long finish.
One to age.
Wow!

My best 2007 experience to date.

Thanks for the note Don. Do you have an estimated drinking window for these going forward?

Now to infinity.
This is drinking so great now in a primary way.
It will only get different.
I enjoy the changes with aging of a great wine like this.
Like the changes of the seasons when you follow it.
Cheers.

Thanks Don. I bought some haven’t hit one yet. I bought a bunch of the 06’s for nearly half of the inflated Parkerized tariff of this version. I will likely wait a while.

FWIW, I had a very different impression of this wine. I think this wine is a bit candied and overblown … very modern styled.

a few caveats to my opinion:

  • based on what I’ve read, my opinion is that of the minority
  • I only tasted one glass of the wine over no-more-than 45 min
  • it was decanted before tasting (but only for an hour or two)

Charvin is one of the few producers that I would trust not to make that style Brian.

yeah, that was precisely my thought before tasting it. I was surprised and disappointed. I figure if that’s what Charvin put out in '07, then I am most certainly steering far and wide of the '07 vintage.
