2007 Charles Smith Merlot Velvet Devil- USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (6/12/2009)
This is an interesting $12 wine. Approaching it from that point of view, it will please.
It’s medium in color, and maybe a bit of burnt umber in color. (Hate to say brown). The nose has some reddish fruits of cherries, raspberries, plum and red currants. The palate reveals a very balanced smooth soft style merlot that has a slightly elevated acid level. It’s lively and fresh. 30 minutes later the velvetiness arrives. It’s plusher and fuller with a bit more character and enjoyment. Always in balance, always giving. When I first had this a few months back, my note stated “I loved it for what it is, not for what tradition tells me it should be” and I stand behind that today. (90 pts.)
Thanks for the note Mike. I was going to pull one last night, but opted for an '07 Boom Boom Syrah instead. K Vintners is my new house wine, I bought a case and a half of the Kung Fu girl Riesling and half a case each of Boom Boom and Velvet Devil. I hope they last the summer.
I also ordered more of the Royal City Syrah. I actually thought about buying into someones Alban allocation for a bottle of Seymours, but opted to get 2 bottles of the Royal City and have some change left over instead. Your reviews on that wine helped guide my decision.
