2007 Cayuse Syrah Armada Vineyard - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley (4/1/2012)
My first experience with Cayuse and I’m glad to have had it. Being honest, the only thing I’ve known about Cayuse is that Cristophe Baron makes thew wine and it has an absurdly long wait list. Popped this and let it sit for an hour. Upon my first whiff of the nose, I got some severe funk (of which I learned later is a somewhat common trait.) I mean, wow, this funk was overpowering, almost off-putting. felt a little flat mid–palate with a decent finish. I put the cork back in after a glass and decided to let it sit a day.
Opened on day 2, with some trepidation, thinking maybe Cayuse just isn’t my thing. Boy, was I wrong…dead wrong. This was fan-effing-tastic. Nose of game, deep black olives, dark fruit and a touch of mocha. Full bodied on the palate without going overboard. Leading to a spicy finish with juicy acidity and some gripping tannins (that softened up somewhat with air.) Finish lasted forever.
Every time I went back to the wine, it felt more and more complex. Just a beautiful wine all around. Just what I need, another wine to obsess over…
