2007 Cameron Gehrt’s Vyd Pinot Noir, Oregon
Cameron Pinots start with a pervasive and distinctive reductive funk and this was no different. I’ve pretty much stopped writing TNs on young examples when popped & poured. After a night in the fridge:
Mild cinnamon spice with earth, forest floor and that typical woodsy (not oak) aroma that signals an Oregonian upbringing. There’s a mild smoky meat element to the nose. Great acidity and a balanced attack leaning towards a darker cherry/briar fruit profile with touches of citrus and a prevalent glycerined umami richness. The midpalate remains elegant but firm with appreciably more substance than the first night. The tannins are accessible but massage enough to remind one about the wine’s infancy. The finish is sensual and moderately long. For a complex Burgundian food friendly Pinot at a price < $30, this is among the finest PN values I’ve tasted in the last 5 years.
