one of the nice things about being totally disorganized in the wine cellar and completely out of date with CellarTracker is the joy of finding something you didn’t even know you owned when rummaging through the cellar. Such was the situation when I recently opened a case of 6 each of the Antonin Guyon Meursault Charmes and Corton Charlemagne. I have no idea who Guyon is or how he so surreptitiously smuggled a complete case of his wine into my locked cellar. I only wish he would share the magic trick with other producers such as DRC.
Regardless, I popped open the Charmes a couple nights ago and was treated to a beautiful Meursault that would have made any producer proud. I didn’t take any specific notes, but it was quintessential Meursault built to age–with riveting fruit, minerals and acidity. The Corton Charlemagne a few nights later was similar in its outstanding quality, but a notch or three above the Meursault with fabulous citrus flavors wrapped around a steel core of acidity–as good as any young Corton Charlemagne I’ve ever tasted.

I wonder if we got these from the place (NYC based shop) that had a beyond screaming deal on these 2 wines (I turned board member Roger Nellans on to this too and he got these as well). I agree, both wines are lovely and for what I paid, best deal in a long time. I was impressed enough to give some of their village Chambolles a roll of the dice and bought 2005-2007. Have had the '07 and '05 so far. The '07 is lovely, charming and decidedly Chambolle. The '05 is sumptuous and crazy good for a village wine. I still know little about the domaine but I am impressed with the craftsmanship. I would leap again for sure even at more realistic prices.
Well I think their Charlemagnes from 98, 2000 and 2002 were all really great efforts - until many became poxed. Likewise their Meursault Dessous du Charmes can be a lovely mouthful of Meursault, and without the heaviness I often associate with Charmes. Never kept one of those long enough to be poxed. On reds they are more variable, but I’v eliked their Volnay Clos du Chenes and their 05 monopole Chambolle Clos du Village was a real hit I thought - about 9 remain slumbering in the cellar…

I’ve had some pretty good bottles of 02 volnay chenes that were dirt cheap as well. Quite enjoyable. Also an 05 Aloxe Vercots that was hard and uninspiring on release.

Both of these 2000s from a closeout have been delicious with no premox yet. I especially liked the Meursault Charmes which was just as Bill described.
To me, Guyon’s Corton Clos du Roy is the star of his lineup.
I like these wines Alan.
We bought some earlier vintage versions of the Corton Charlies for our little group.
1995 is especially good. We were afraid of premox but we had a special deal on these to replace any and all bad bottles.
A rare kind of arrangement.
