2007 Altovinum Calatayud Evodia- Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (10/8/2009)
Another cheapo Spanish wine that delivers! Dark wild berry, blackberry, strawberry, plum fruit…funked up nicely with a little sweet tar asphalt, white pepper spice, some dried florals, anise. Intense with the dark wooded spice, and a little out a whack with the sweet/sour acidity…but THIS $7 bottle of wine is tasty, and gives you bright fresh fruit, florals, and spices…what the hell else do ya want??? I drank the whole bottle by myself…killer wine for the $$$!!! (90 pts.)
Here in Oregon it sells for $9.99. Supposedly this is the Eric Solomon replacement for Las Rocas which is now marketed by Gallo at $11.99. Yes, it is quite tasty for the price.
2007 Altovinum Calatayud Evodia- Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (1/12/2012)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over a few hours –
NOSE: very “winey”; sweet red fruit – strawberry, red currant, strawberry jam; menthol; interesting high-toned hint of orange peel.
BODY: clear; ruby color of medium depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: ripe red fruit; strawberry and oaky spice – oak comes across as a French/Hungarian mix; slight note of tar/reduction/rubber tire on the front-mid palate; 14.5% alc. can be tasted a little – dull alcoholic bitterness; short to medium-short finish of moderate intensity; round; not much structure; drink now.
2008 Altovinum Calatayud Evodia- Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (12/14/2010)
Popped and poured. Garnet color in the glass. Red fruit aromas without any floral character. Taste of strawberries and red cherries that gives way to bright acidity. Medium weight with a bit of a bitter finish and then just a slight hint of mocha.
