2007 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg- France, Alsace, Katzenthal, Alsace Grand Cru AOC (1/1/2011)
There seem to be some different cuvees; this is from Robert Chadderdon but I don’t really see any marks of differentiation. Fine golden color, with hints of CO2 bubbles at the bottom of the glass. Intense nose of light pineapple that is becoming more expansive with time. A bit of spritz on the mid palate with some spice notes, and the finish is long with some green apple notes and bright acid. Young but a very nice wine. (90 pts.)
We have three Sommerberg wines which we get from Chadderdon.
The straight up Riesling Somerberg Grand Cru is dry with about 4 gpl rs
Somerberg “E” (Eckberg is a VV Riesling with about 12 gpl rs and the Somerberg “D” (Dudenstein) is a VT with about 25 gpl rs. I can’t remember where the “D” and the “E” are on the label but they’re there. BTW the VT Dudenstein is in a 500 ml bottle.
Haven’t found Boxler locally since Chadderdon and the wholesaler for this area split the sheets a number of years ago.
My '01s are marked as follows, in tiny print in the upper left hand corner of the label: Sommerberg – L31D; Brand – L32.
Tanzer or whoever would review Boxler’s lineup and note various lot bottlings, but we never got any but one lot per Grand Cru; mildly frustrating, but then, I never know if I was missing anything.
