2006 Villa Creek Vulture’s Post Denner- USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (10/2/2009)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 3 days –
– 80% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 5% Grenache –
NOSE: ripe fruits; meaty/beefy; strong dose of cinnamon; oak; hint of chocolate; smoky cranberry; by Day 3, the nose leaned more towards red fruits than it did on Days 1 and 2.
BODY: rustic garnet color of medium to medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: spicy oak/sandalwood; hints of pepper; a bit concentrated; cranberry and blackberry fruits; finish is approximately 40 sec. in length; alc. (15.6%) does not show; basically the same on Day 3, but with an additional hint of Australian black licorice. I still like this wine a lot.
The above-noted bottle was 1 of 2 that I had left from my original purchase of 3. I’ll be drinking the next one sometime in the next 3 years. I’ve had a couple less-than-favorable experiences with barely-aged VC’s in the past year (‘03 MdM, and ‘05 Garnacha) and another so-so experience (‘05 Avenger). Until I personally taste evidence to the contrary, I’m treating VC as ‘short-term’ drinkers. That said, I love their wines, and will continue to buy them.
