Not bad. Not bad at all
I prefer, “It doesn’t suck”
I had never had Thackrey previously… a friend (George Heretier of Gang of Pour) brought the '05 Sirius to a tasting a few months back and I thought it was fantastic. Rich, but balanced, nice structure, etc. In fact, I was so impressed that I picked up a few bottles.
Love to hear it because I just bought some in Sept - have you had the 07 Orion?
Not yet. Standing up. No doubt that it’s going to be excellent based on past performance
I’m new to Thackrey wines this year. I’ve had the good fortune to try four of them in the past two months and can emphatically say that “none of them sucked”. In fact, I have been amazed and will gladly seek out more.
Had the 06 Sirius Petite Syrah last week, and agree with Jim’s comment (although his was '05) of rich, balanced and structured. Super dark, and extremely smooth. It may grow into the 95+ rating, but to my palate it was easily a 92-93 pointer now.
I recently found a good price on the '03 Aquila and drank one this week. I really didn’t have high expectations for a California Sangiovese, but it greatly exceded them. Polar opposite of the Sirius PS to me, as it was much lighter both in color and in mouthfeel, but again extremely smooth with a nice finish. Good fruit, mostly strawberry. I’m defintely an amateur taster, but probably would have guessed Pinot had I tasted this blind. Will buy again.
The two other Thackrey wines were the 03 Orion and the latest Pleiaides (XVII). The '03 Orion had a fantastic nose, good fruit, and a long, smooth finish. I wish I could afford to drink this wine more often, as it was one of my favorites of the year. Was fortunate to find an 06 and two 07s to lay down and am waiting on an '88 and a '96 purchased at auction. Keeping my fingers crossed that they are in as good condition as described.
Finally, the Pleiades “kitchen sink” field blend is a good value in the low $20 range. I don’t recall specifics at the moment, but enjoyed it and will purchase more as a good daily drinker or cellar defender.
I have not had the pleasure of trying the Thackrey Pinot yet, but hope to soon.
Thanks to the board members here and at the “other” board for turning me on to a great winemaker.
