TN: 2006 Scholium Project The Prince In His Cave

2006 Scholium Project Sauvignon Blanc The Prince In His Caves Farina (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain)

Very interesting, thought provoking wine. This Sav. Blanc is nothing like any other I’ve had. The only way I would know it was such was from reading. This wine had a deep golden color and a nose of wild grasses and faint melon. Slightly herbal on the palate. Slightly acidic, but not the tangy type of acidic common with Sav Blanc. Some heat on the finish. Long finish loaded with apricot and a bit of salinity. This is my only bottle. If I had more, I’d hold off for a bit before opening another.

I have two bottles of it remaining and I really enjoyed the last one I had. Must have been sometime in the fall. It’s definitely a little thicker than a normal sauv. blanc, or so I think. I really wish I had more. Had you had the Naucratis (sp?)?

I haven’t had it Jeb

Ps - that is an awesome sig. line!

Damn, I haven’t had it either, although it’s sitting in the rack at home.

I figured it was a better signature line that saying that San Diego is German for whales…

goodness i enjoyed the Naucratis i had last summer. here is a formal tn written by a young, budding wine snob…

The Scholium Project 2007 Naucratis, Lost Slough Vineyard (100% Verdelho).

Pale green straw in the glass, this wine has a beautifully expressive (if not high intensity) nose of honeysuckle, papaya, cool stones, and traces of grass, genmai, smoke, straw, and lime. In the mouth it offers up sweet, luscious, beautiful fruit with medium-to-full body and gorgeously soft texture. Undeniably delicious, with excellent acidity, the fruit lasts over 30 seconds on the finish. The flavors are well-integrated and harmonious, and it’s so damn yummy I’m smacking my fist on the table repeatedly. The alcohol fumes burn my nasal membranes, and it’s definitely hot in the mouth (14.9%), but you know what? I don’t care.

my thoughts were as follows from Sept, 08: i am starting with this wine ~ @ 60*. love the pale color and the tropical fruit with some flint in the nose. mouthfeel is superb and finish lengthy. enjoyed with grilled swordfish with Manchego shavings and some squash. this wine, while having a serious WHANG, has a sublime, unctuous mouthfeel and a terrific finish.

as what was left of the wine warmed for lunch the next day i noticed the acidity and WHANG had both mellowed overnight. i actually think some folks would prefer this wine on day #2. blind i’d guess this is Sav Blanc today, yesterday i’d have been clueless blind.

my bottle of Prince are still chillin’. will get to one this summer.

No mention of Tiger Piss? This has the most feral cat pee nose I’ve ever encountered (and I loved it!)

I left 1/2 a bottle open in the fridge for a couple of days and it seemed to round out a little- but maintain its presence.

I think I finished my last glass from a red solo cup while walking around the neighborhood throwing rocks at chipmunks.

This is weird shizz, butI liked it- a lot.
