TN: 2006 Scherrer "Old and Mature vines" Scherrer Vineyard, Alexander Valley Zinfandel

I’d just finished a great bottle of Lager Meredith’s 2007 “Chester’s Anvil” and wanted to follow with the 06 Scherrer for comparison. For people who avoid my posts (I’m guessing around 65% of this Board), these two Zinfandels are for Zinfandel haters. And anyone else who likes great wine at great prices. People who aren’t Francophobes say that both wines are “Burgundian.” But don’t let that dissuade you from trying these.

14.5% alcohol. Meduim dark ruby red. Very expressive red fruit aromas. Bright, expressive, complex and balanced rasberries, cranberries and a touch of pepper on the palate. Lingering aftertaste.

A wonderful, all-around wine. You can love this for the concentrated red fruit, or for the fact that it goes great with food. You can love this for the fact that Fred “gives” them away.

One of California’s great Zinfandels. [winner.gif]

I read your comments, Mike. newhere

However, “great prices…” I’d take issue with that notion of QPR. The Scherrer, for sure…

Thanks for the note on this. I haven’t drunk much of that cuvee, but am a huge fan of the Shale Terrace.

Cheers,

Vintage after vintage, the Scherrer OMV is one of my absolute MUST buys

One of California’s great wine makers!

This and the Shale Terrace are both terrific wines and wonderful values. The 07 of this is also excellent.

The 06 was typically great. I think the 07 is even better.

I had a cheerful argument with a friend over whether this wine or the 2006 Carlisle, Sonoma County was the better wine. He being the flamboyant extrovert voted for the elegant delineated Scherrer and I being the opposite liked the Carlisle. But I’m glad that have more of both of these.

Me too Peter!

I just found a little hidden stash of the 06 Carlisle Sonoma in my cellar this afternoon. Nice!

You can’t have too much of either of these!

Mike,

An '06 Scherrer? Have you gone mad, man? That’s like Roman Polanski…oh, forget it.
