TN: 2006 Saxum James Berry Vineyard (USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles)

Having just bought the 2007s, I realized I had not opened a single 2006. Popped and poured. Huge nose that says nothing if not Syrah (which is 48% of the blend). No heat, despite being over 16% ABV!! Over a couple of hours, this became more and more seamless. Beautifully balanced while being ‘big.’ Never goes over the line of seeming goopy or syrupy or heavy. Dark red fruit and a long long finish with flavors outside of my feeble vocabulary. (95 pts.)

Awesome note James, I get that same feeling with Saxum sometimes, you just can’t find the right words to describe them. I love Justins wines and will continue to be a buyer. I just can’t wait to see what the deal is with the extended barrel aged wines, how much better can they get?

Completely disagree with this. Had this last week with a bunch of folks and it was almost universally panned. Will get a note up on it sometime in the next day or two, but I will say that as a party trick, I was having folks just put their mouth over my glass and just breath in. The alcohol fumes had folks thinking it was bourbon in the glass.

Different strokes and all.

Cheers,

Brad

i had very mixed feelings about this bottle myself. look fwd a more focused tasting of another this winter once the weather turns.

In the `different strokes’ vein, my wife did find this a bit hot when first opened… but, she didn’t complain about that later on… now… we did notice the alcohol in a different way, i.e., we definitely got tipsy very quickly.

Yeah, Jay Hack forced this down my throat and it burned all the way down. This was WAY over the top for me, in all aspects (ie alcohol, sugar, weight, balance, etc…). But as Brad says, different strokes for different folks.
Cheers! [cheers.gif]
