2006 Saxum James Berry Vineyard- USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (10/25/2009)
Decanted 6 1/2 hours, consumed over 3. It’s easy to assume that this is a massive wine, given the color and texture. On the contrary. This wine is extremely elegant, showing nuances that are usually reserved for wines a decade into their lifecycle. Crushed rocks, baked plum, purple flowers, sweet spices. Lingering finish. Lovely wine.
Thanks for the note, Brian. I have three and not tried yet.
That is a long decant - but from other notes I have read, quite necessary.
Did you feel this benefitted further from the time in the glass, or after 6.5 hours did it stay pretty much the same for the next 3? TIA.

Having just bought the 2007s, I realized I had not opened a single 2006. Popped and poured. Huge nose that says nothing if not Syrah (which is 48% of the blend). No heat, despite being over 16% ABV!! Over a couple of hours, this became more and more seamless. Beautifully balanced while being ‘big.’ Never goes over the line of seeming goopy or syrupy or heavy. Dark red fruit and a long long finish with flavors outside of my feeble vocabulary. (95 pts.)
