2006 Ross Andrew Winery Cabernet Sauvignon- USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (4/7/2011)
Dark maroon. Restrained everything right now. With a deep sniff you get black and red fruit. The palate is tight and tannic. Some licorice, tobacco and leather are there. Austere, earthy finish.
My father in law likes Bordeaux and liked this wine over the summer, so I pulled a bottle for him for Spencer steaks on the grill tonight. It perked up with the meat, but is quite unyielding right now. I won’t touch another one of these for a year or so.
Ross Mickel is doing some really special stuff here in Washington right now.
Thanks for the note. Picked up some from the tasting room last month. They’re much better with air. You mentioned it opened with the meat; did you decant? If so, for how long?
Popped and poured a glass of this tonight, and I have to say I’m disappointed. The nose is total espresso, the palate is toasty, spicy oak. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, but this is really showing its oak right now, and not in a good way. I’m a big fan of the RA Boushey Syrah, FWIW, but this isn’t doing it for me tonight.
