Slow Ox’ed for about an hour while I prepared dinner last night…marinated Flannery Skirt Steak with Haricot Vert & Roasted Garlic.
Initial nose of vanilla and molasses that was very pronounced. In the glass, the wine is visibly viscous and almost black. First taste was NO fruit, but rather burnt sugar, oak, vanilla and an astringent bite…not good. As the night progressed, the wine really didn’t. It was a disjointed mess that never offered up any fruit. Just a monolithic beast that I don’t know if it will ever come around to being enjoyable. The only plus is that at 15.5% stated ETOH, it wasn’t hot at all. I got a deal on it, so I did not pay full release…but still at $85, it was tough to swallow.
I certainly hope so since I have two more bottles. What I don’t get is the extreme lack of fruit. Both of his petites from '06 were so concentrated and intense, it leaves me shaking my head in wonder in regard to what happened here.
Thanks for the note. I was actually debating whether to purchase this (release price $110), even had the order form ready. Do you think it was was in a shut down/awkward phase? At any rate, more than enough good wines out there. I will pass instead.
I tasted the wine with Foley in August and there was plenty of fruit and it was a fine drink Tex. It is either now in an awkward stage or your little bargain purchase was errr very little.
