2006 Robert Biale Zinfandel Old Kraft- USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (6/4/2009)
I agree with pkbackman that this has been by far my favorite of the 2006 Biale’s. Reminds me of the wines they made pre-2005. A lot of fruit, but not overdone. Tasty but not flabby. Big but not too hot. This was really a great bottle of wine. (Made better by the Lakers 25 point win!)
Very dark deep purple color to it. Getting somewhat of a smores nose to it along with dark fruits, blackberries in particular with a little oak hiding just beneath the surface and maybe the very faintest hint of petrol. Full bodied wine with ripe plum and dark fruits coming through and just a touch of earth all the way through the finish. Great balance to this. Nice acidity backing everything up to go along with a good amount of tannins that need a little time to be resolved.
All in all this was very tasty and something of a revelation considering the other '06s I’ve had.
What happened to Biale? I absolutely loved their Zins, and the 04 Black Chicken was one of my all time favorites (1 mag left at this point). But I’ve dropped off the list because everything after 2004 is tasting simpler and sweeter than it used to, without any of the secondary peppery spicy character they used to have. Another vicitim of pleasing Parker’s palate? New winemaker? It is too bad…
