2006 Qupé Chardonnay Block Eleven Bien Nacido Reserve - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley (1/29/2010)
Lemon meringue, almonds, and fresh baked scones. Buttery, but not overdone. Maintains a lively, spry character while still giving some ooomph on the finish. Nice wine. (89 pts.)

I have not been a huge fan of the Qupe Chards over the yrs (followed 'em from the very start) because they
have often been pretty oaky and sometimes a bit on the volatile side. But this Block 11 is a whole
nuther beast. Much as you describe it, Randy…lively character. Easily the best Chard Bob has probably
ever made. I think he’s making the best wines he ever has right now. His HillsideEstate Roussanne is one of the great Roussannes in the world.

I tasted the '07 vintage of this wine in Los Olivos last week. Certainlly on the oakier side of California Chardonnay, with vanilla and toast along alongside the apple/pear fruit. But it’s not overdone and given a few years to settle down, this should be very nice.
