TN: 2006 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay Estate (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast)

  • 2006 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay Estate - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (9/1/2009)
Had with crab cakes with a red pepper remoulade. Opened and consumed over 2 plus hours. Started a little more new world than I remember the first time. Very tropical, with a white chocolate note, minerals and a shortish finish. I have to admit I was sort of ambivalent about the wine but after about an hour this started to fill out on the back end and brighten up. Showing more citrus, pear, almond skin with a little white chocolate and minerals with a more mineral laden finish. Very nice, albeit our last one. Several of the 07’s sleeping which I liked a little better. I’d guess if you have these, hold off another year and drink over the next 3-4. (91 pts.)

Year in and year out, Great QPR!

We popped 1 this weekend and agree it needs another year or 2 to fully integrate. It was nice, but not as good as the 04s & 05s at this stage.

Tony, I think 06 was a bit of an unusual year, given the cool, somewhat wet finish. I know many vineyards had botrytis creeping in just around harvest, and I think that’s part of the more tropical note you find in this particular vintage.

I haven’t tried a Peay in a while. I have liked everything I have tried from them. Time to try again!

They are a quality operation. The wines need some time, but are some of the finest (not biggest) around. I’ve gravitated to them more and more over the last few years. I love how the chards have aged!
