Round two. Let me say, I love the cabs, the PS is good and the Zin is hit or miss. The grenache plain ol’ sucks. Ive been told it needs time to blossom, yadda yadda, but this is sour and tart. Not enough fruit, not enough sugar, and too much water. Some oily taste too. As the old saying goes if this “blossoms” into something better Ill eat my proverbial hat. I have one bottle left. Ill open it only when someone says its ready. First time this year I dump a bottle down the drain that has no flaw other than “it sucks.”
Ouch! Thanks for the warning.
I tread lightly into Cali syrah and even lighter into grenache (although I love CDP), so a wine better have a pretty stellar track record among tasters to get me to even try it. This will be an easy pass.
(FWIW, I do love the Cali syrah and grenache superstars - SQN, Saxum, etc.)
Kinda harsh, dontcha think?
I say that as I am about ready to pour a bottle of 2004 QC Red Wine down the drain 'cuz it royally sucks.
I also enjoy Outpost in general, but their grenache is my least favorite of their offerings. It’s generally a fairly nice wine with good aromatics but seems to lack the ‘stuffing’ I seem to like in grenaches - and no, I don’t mean they should add anything else like Syrah to give it a punch . . . perhaps they should bleed the grenache to concentrate it?!?!? Whole cluster?!?!?
Thanks for sharing - and I would not pour it down the drain - I really do hope you think it’s better than that . . .
Cheers . . .
Dumped it before I posted Larry. I opened it yesterday, done with it. Im completely out of space in the cellar, Id rather drink something else Life’s too short.
I just had the 05 and it seems to be opposite of your note. A LOT OF FRUIT and sugar. Definitely for the new world palate. Kinda like a high octane pinot noir mixed with syrah haha…
Had the 06 Grenache last month - and this is NOT my perception of Outpost wine. I totally agree with “Z”. Weak, thin, dilute, poor. We don’t dump anything around here, but this was darn close to drinking nothing.
Had this soon after release and didn’t like it at all. I am a big fan of their zins and cabs, but I will not be buying any more of their grenache.
The Petites and Cabs are killer.
Larry
The Outpost Grenache is fermented 50% whole cluster and aged in neutral french oak barrels. Some bleed is done if necessary.
That being said, 07 is pretty killer. At least it was in barrel. 05 was very good. 04 was big, it was the first or second harvested crop in a very hot year (and only 25% WC IIRC). I was a fan of the 04 at first but think the heat was a little excessive. I thought the 06 was too light and just not concentrated enough for whatever reason…almost Rose like.
If you aren’t a fan, so be it but if you are a Grenache fan…at least someone who appreciates straight Grenache not pounded with new oak or blended with a lot of Syrah, I think the 07 will do it for you.
BTW - wine is bone dry, no residual sugar at all.
Disclaimer - I used to work at Outpost and was there when the 07 was harvested and in barrel.
tony,
i certainly do dig the variety, especially in the manner you say this is made, and therefore I will need to seek the 07 out!
Thanks!
Cheers!
Indeed it is. I had it from bottle in October with Dan up at the winery. I am buyer.
I had the '05 at an offline this past April and thought it was excellent; rich sweet red fruits, herbes de Provence and floral notes.
I avoid dirtying my syrah with grenache tvm
I might have to give the 07 a one bottle chance I guess. Only Us grenache that has ever done it for me was the 05 Rocket block. Even the SQN grenaches, while good, arent worth the money to me. The syrah certainly is.
Have had the 07 three times and dig it…had the 04 last weekend and we dumped it also, it was a piney hot mess.
