TN: 2006 Navarro Correas - Structura Ultra (Argentina)

Served blind, after a decant of an hour or so.

Some chocolate on the nose. In the mouth, Pow! (Think Batman – “Zap! Bonk!”) Alcohol, huge amounts of extract and soft tannins. Uggh, I thought. Not my kind of wine. Hot on the finish.

Generic big, expensive California cab? Maybe Spanish?

It did seem to be Bordeaux grapes, whose signature is usually lost in California when the grapes pass a certain ripeness level.

Over 20 minutes or so in the glass, this came into better balance. Not my style, but better than some wines this over the top.

Positive points:

  • This preserves some malbec (52%) and cab (30%) character. It has not turned to generic overripe red grapes.

  • At the $35-$40 price point, this is an awesome value if you like this style. I think this would hold its own against a lot of $100+ Napa cabs. I suspect I’ve prefer it.
