2006 Mount Eden Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon- USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (11/22/2014)
This one needed an hour or two of air, as it began a bit coarse and backwards, but it evolves into a righteous medium-weight, serious Cabernet. Lots of leather, herbal dark fruit, and a long finish. Still plenty of tannic support, this can age indefinitely, but drinks well right now with the right food.
Thanks for the note Nate. Still sounds pretty unevolved from your note and matches my impressions from the last bottle I had two years ago. I think this is one vintage that really needs time but has the stuffing to unwind nicely. The 04s I’ve been drinking have been great but it sounds like this one will need 10+ to start showing anything.
So curiosity got the best of me and I decided to give one of these a go tonight, number 4 from a case purchased on release. I haven’t had one since November of 2012 so I let one rip. While it is remarkably better than 2 years ago and getting better with 3 hours of air, it’s still painfully young.
Super gritty when I first opened it, lots of oak and angular tannins. Air helps it a bunch but overall it still seems dense and rich with polished tannins. Never strays into the dark fruit category, fresh red fruits but needs time.
