2006 Lucien Le Moine Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets- France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (8/31/2014)
At Troquet in Boston with Jamie Manley, wonderful expressive nose and a melange of berries, flowers and spice. Slides silky smooth and has layers of red berry fruit with spice and and a long slightly rich finish. Tannins are silky smooth but the wine is still pretty young. Followed over 2 hours in the decanter and it really opened up. I think still has a little bit of impact from the oak and will continue to unwind and reveal itself with time. Now I just need to find a bottle. Hold for a few more years if you have it or decant 2-3 hours. Excellent. (94 pts.)
Thanks for the note. Did you notice a lot of CO2 on opening? They say to always decant these but I’m wondering if the CO2 dissipates over time. I have a bunch of 05s that I liked on release but I haven’t checked in since then and I’ve lost track of this producer.
I hope the LLM bottles I own track Fred’s experience. Mounir seems to have become the 21st century Dominique Laurent - not so much for his methods but for his ability to rile a certain segment of Burgundy aficionados. I currently have faith in my reds, but less sure of my whites…
Jim- your note on the 11 LB really reminded me of the experience we had with this 06. I see the prices have jumped significantly on the 10 version of this wine. It’s more retail then what i paid for at the restaurant.
Interesting, thanks. I likes the Le Moine’s that I tried before buying in 05 (although count me in the camp of those who think Laurent’s supposedly over-oaked wines have aged beautifully, particularly the vosnes). I just had a very hard time continuing to pay top end prices for Le Moine post-05 given my uncertainty and concern about the CO2 use.
Alex- my prior experience with LLM was the 99 Les Charmes which i flat out loved. I have the 08 so sounds like i need to give it plenty of time. I don’t love the new prices though so doubt I’ll be buying more. My limited experience with aged Laurents has also been very positive.
