TN: 2006 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 2006 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (11/6/2009)
Needed a long decant…very fresh, tasty, crushed wild berry/cherry/raspberry fruit…total grenache! Everything else is hiding. With some coaxing…you get a little white pepper(way less than the '05), pine tree sap, dried sweet herbs/tobacco, sage, some leather. Ever-so-ofter, a burst of coffee, dark chocolate, kirsch, and some dusty cedar spice. Not the epiphany the first(not second) bottle of the '05 I had a while ago…this wine is a little lighter, in need of some balance…but still darn tasty, and my kind of CdP. Try back in a year. +pts (92 pts.)

Thanks for the note. I had a bottle a few months ago that had a hint of astringency in the finish. Bottle variation I hope?

Nice note Buzz! 2006 was a ‘classically styled’ vintage compared to 05 & 07 - I got a taste of a 06 T-L VV a couple weeks ago that definately needed some sleep time.

Agree with your note. Definitely benefits considerably from a good long decant (which seems to eliminate or at least moderate the slightly harsh edge of this too young wine), but this has plenty of tasty fruit and CdP character…
