Evidently the NM Costco winebuyer is getting a bit adventurous: not only is it labelled as varietal Nebbiolo, but from Mexico to boot! Actually this a very good modern-styled wine that given the sub-$20 outperforms price most of its CA neighbors to the north for this the ripe, extracted, chocolately style. The only drawback is that it’s not particularly expressive of Nebbiolo, but for the price is a nice QPR as a chewy crowd pleaser. And it slaked a curiosity to try something from the Valle de Guadalupe. No, it was not due to Suckling’s mention of Grehhhnash and Seeerah from the region.

2006 L. A. Cetto Nebbiolo Reserva Privada - Mexico, Baja California, Valle de Guadalupe (5/12/2012)
Dark chocolate, coffee, tobacco and prune. A dark, extracted, and tannic but chewy Nebbiolo. Full bodied, rich yet dry, med/low acidity. Delicious for what it is, but not the most varietally accurate version of Nebbiolo. (86 pts.)
