TN: 2006 Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch

  • 2006 Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (6/30/2009)
Tasted at opening - very tight. Immediately decanted. After an hour, still a taut, muscular wine…showing some lean cherry fruit, pleasant acid, and monstrous tannins. There is some minerality burried in there, and the overall impression is promising, but right now this is all about structure, structure, structure. Requires further cellaring to flesh out - I’ll leave my other bottle alone for 18 - 24 months. (88+ pts.)

Scott, thanks for the note. Guess this one can’t be lumped in with the rest of my RRV '06s that seem to be drinking well right now?

Ken, IMO this one needs more time for the tannin to resolve. It’s not a flashy wine right now.

I tasted this last night. I thought it was very good (I basically inhaled it) and much more accessable than did Scott.

I’d agree that it will continue to improve, but it is enjoyable now.

Definitely dig this vineyard and what Jamie is doing with it. This was my favorite Kutch ever when I tasted it – before the 2007s. Certainly could stand some more time, but it’s going to reward the cellaring.
