2006 Kirkland Signature Meritage - USA, California, Napa Valley (11/10/2009)
Wow! what a surprise here. I have had several of the Kirkland brand wines, and knew purchasing this wine that they were pretty solid everyday drinkers, but for $10.50, this one most certainly takes the QPR cake. The nose is subtle but shows cassis, roasted coco beans, blackberries and red berries. The flavor is certainly very primary, but there are some really nice, meaty dark fruit and herby flavors in here, especially once it takes in some air. Very well balanced with the soft fruits of the merlot, dense structure of the cabernet sauvignon, and earthy herbs of the cabernet franc. Probably one of the most surprising QPR’s I have come a cross in a lot of years. For all intents and purposes, this should be plonk, but what you really have is a very well made wine from flavorful juice that makes for fantastic every day drinking. (87 pts.)
